I know I am new to all of this and a little naive. I made my first bjd, Destiny, with the intention of her being a very limited edition of 10. I mainly made her for the main character of my book. But now I have fallen in love with this artform and have sculpted a new head, of my niece Danielle, that I will add to the body. I am planning on having a line of bjds at IDEX. I have discovered the versatility of these dolls and have had so much fun planning the new costumes. Here is the thing, I was hoping to have only either one-of-a-kind dolls or very limited editions.
After making 14 dolls in the last month, that is just the bodies,no costumes yet. Even if I have very limited editions it is a lot of work. I have been sanding for days. Literally, my fingers hurt from all the sanding! I don't think I was prepared for all the other work that goes into these bodies. I never intended for this to hook me like it has. I love the dolls and want to be able to have a good line of dolls. But in order to do that I see that either I am going to have to hire someone to help me or send the dolls overseas to have the bodies reproduced.
So here is my question to both doll makers and collectors, what is the preference, for a lower rate of production and a hand-made by the artist doll, or a doll that is mass produced? And if she is mass produced, do vinyl bodies detract from the doll itself? I need to know which way to go so that I can plan what I have to offer at IDEX. And how I am going to go about making the dolls I will present.
Is there an easier way to sand the seams? I have a dremel that helps, but being a perfectionist, I do a lot of the finish work by hand.
It is quite a dilemma for me and I don't know which way to turn. I am very new to all of this and want to make the right decisions. So any advice would be greatly appreciated!
