Boxes for dolls? Empty Boxes for dolls?

Post  Elizabeth Dye Thu Nov 19, 2009 7:16 am

I have searched and searched for a company to make boxes for my bjds. To no avail:( I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I need to have a custom made box to sell my Destiny doll. I am going to check at the local level in the printing industry. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Elizabeth!
I don't put my dolls in boxes-- except for shipping. The beautiful designer boxes are nice, but what do people actually do with them? I decided to not do the fancy boxes and wrap my dolls in tissue and pink bubble wrap with bows and certs-- saves EVERONE time, money AND the planet.

What do you collectors think...does it make a big difference if your doll comes in a collector box?

What a great discussion! Very Happy

    Kim,
I am of the same opinion because the two dolls I have are not in their box and the boxes are in the closet. And the boxes are so difficult to open. They are like a floral box with a lid that is so tight. So I am not real fond of them. But then I have noticed alot of doll collectors keep their boxes and the fact that if the original box is kept with the doll it is more valuable. So I am torn. I would love a more suitcase style box rather than a floral style box. I want her to be able to be easily stored or removed from it. I love to play with her but want to keep her safe, so if I could find a box like that I would really be happy. I have a few boxes I have purchased at Tuesday morning that have flowers printed on the outside and are stackable. They have a metal handle as well.
I have searched for the makers of the boxes, which are made in China of course. But can't find anything even similar.
What do the collector's want? I would really love the feedback!

Yes, I know-- I went all through that in my head before I made the decision. My education is in Advertising and Marketing, so it makes a striking presentation to have the doll come in a fancy, beautifully printed collector box-- but I too, take the doll out and store it and it sits there and takes up room. Also adds to your shipping cost because it's heavier and inside another box so bigger too. So, all said and done it probably adds at least $5 to each doll. At least for something like the size of an MSD. If you send 200 dolls out a year, that's an extra $1000!!!!!!!!!!

So, if a collector has say, 50 dolls.... what do you do with all those dang boxes????? Shocked

I'd really like to know what collectors think-- if people really, really want them-- I'd probably do them, maybe for the little ones???

The box is not important to me. But that's probably because I display everyone I bring home! Don't see any sense in having them if I can't display them. flower

Snow White (from Goodreau) was the first BJD I got that didn't come in a box, just in her pillow, and it was so nice to not deal with a box!

The box I got with my SoulDoll Soul Kid is HUGE and taking up a ton of space, but I can't bring myself to get rid of it...

My main collection of dolls are Himstedt. Because they come in a box and for some reason some collectors feel the doll is more valuable with both the inner box and shipper I keep them in case I need to sell one.

    This is a royal pain.

If the dolls had not originally come in a box we collectors wouldn't have the problem of storing them.

I was more than happy to get my Anya from Kim Lasher without a "special" box and wish that all my dolls came without "special" boxes. No need to feel the need to keep them and find a place to store them.

    Just my opinion.

Another benefit to getting a doll without a fancy box is less evidence to hide! lol Laughing Though I'm sure nobody here does that... Razz

I really like the idea of not having to figure out where the boxes should go. But on the other hand, I've moved 3 times since starting collecting seriously, once from Michigan to New Jersey, so for those, the boxes come in very handy as a way to keep the dolls safe in transit.

One of the ideas for box storage I had came out of a suggestion from my cousin. She suggested putting a narrow table between my sofa and the wall to give me more display space. I ended up getting 3 shallow bookcases from Ikea that together are the same width as the couch. The added benefit is that the shelves hold lots of boxes and are hidden from view. Unfortunately, I have way more boxes than fit there!! LOL. When I lived in Michigan it was easy as I had a large unfinished basement as storage. Now I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment in NJ so storage is a challenge.

Like the others, I hate having to deal with the boxes, but I can't bring myself to throw them out, so it is rather freeing to get a doll without a box.

I also concur. I really enjoy not having to deal with the boxes as well. I think the sleeping bag is a nice touch, but also is not necessary. When I get a new BJD, she gets set up right away.

And Lori--I agree with about less evidence. "What new doll? Oh no, don't be silly! That's just a new wig!" Smile

I like the boxes...only so I have something to ship them in if I resell. I agree...too many boxes add up fast with no where to store them. So I am at odds with liking boxes and disliking them. If they were easy to break down and then put back together then maybe they could make me happy both ways!!

I think I have found a solution, a box that can be folded. It is not a big fancy box but will give me the assurance that I have something I can send the dolls in and the buyer doesn't have to deal with a huge box. Thank you all for your thoughts on this matter! It has really helped!

I like the boxes my dolls have come in, and I have saved them. I keep each doll's things in her box.I think another reason I like the packagaing in the boxes is that when you receive the doll it feels like you are opening a special gift. (Kim, it sounds like you give your collectors that experience without a specialized box. Smile )Also, like nodakdame said they are good for moving the dolls safely.

On the other hand, like all of you have said, my dolls are never in their boxes once they are opened. I have them out always and I wonder what to do with the boxes! I was thinking of getting some kind of new display shelving thing and I wanted it to also have drawers or cabinets or something for box storage! Rolling Eyes (My dolls are all tinies so the boxes aren't as big as some others.)
